Sara Harriger is enjoying her first assignment to Japan as the Education and Exchanges Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. For ten months before taking up her work at the Embassy, Sara studied advanced Japanese at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute in Yokohama. Prior diplomatic assignments since joining the Foreign Service in 2006 include Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and New Delhi, India.
Born and raised in Alaska, Sara studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and Arabic Language at Middlebury College. Before embarking on a career in diplomacy, Sara tried her hand at various professions ranging from seasonal wild-land firefighting to teaching French at her alma mater. Her hobbies include Capoeira, practicing guitar, and exploring Japan; she plans to visit each of Japan’s 47 prefectures by the end of her assignment.
